Brow Tips from Juliana Landis @ Umberto Salon in Beverly Hills

[originally posted at StyleApothecary]

For professionally groomed brows in the comfort of your home the key is to have great tools and good light. I always try to have good natural light when tweezing at home as you can see even the smallest of hairs. Use a regular mirror as magnifying mirrors can be deceiving and you can end up over-tweezing.

Before you start find a brow shape that suits you and use a brow pencil to fill in the desired shape. Brows should begin in line with the nostril, you can hold your brow pencil vertically to find the right point exactly. The highest point of the arch should fall above the outer edge of your iris. Hold your pencil in front of your nose and tilt it diagonally to the outer corner of the eye, the line up where it meets the brow is where the outer point of the brow should be, you may have to extend the brow in this case you would pencil it in.

Now you have your brow shape its time to trim. Brush brow hairs upward and trim above the top line of the brow with nail scissors, you can also brush hairs down and trim if necessary.

It’s time to tweeze. Use a white pencil to shade in the areas you want to tweeze then start plucking away, if you are not sure if a certain hair will alter the brow shape, move it with the tweezer without plucking to see how it will look and if it looks ok pluck it, if not leave it alone, this helps to avoid holes in the eyebrow.

For at home maintenance the tools you will need are slated tweezers, I like tweezerman as they have a lifetime guarantee, I like Paula Dorf's brow pencil in Wet Sand, it works well on most people even blonds and Paula Dorf's Brow powder trio comes in Brunette, Blond, Red and Neutral and has wax to keep unruly brows in place. I like Prestige's soft white pencil to outline the brow.
